Time after time, I have people come to me who have been adversely affected by a communication they received from other mediums.  Very often, it is done in an open chat room on the internet, and has left the person feeling like they have been exposed to the whole world.  It is with the sense of promoting ethical communication that we give you the following ethical procedures adopted by most professional mediums.

The reader carries a great deal of responsibility when proclaiming the ability to contact the other side.

The first rule of thumb is to make the person you are reading aware of the content and style of your reading.  We are all individuals and vary in the way we receive and give out information.  Taking a few moments to explain to the person you are reading what they can expect in a reading is of extreme importance.

Take a few moments to "feel" out the mental state of the person you are reading.  We must not forget for one second the impact of the words we utter.  Pay close attention to the responses you receive during the reading, they will be the indicator of how the information is being received.

Be very careful of giving out detailed descriptions of the injuries at the scenes of traumatic transitions.  It may be that the person you are communicating for may not know the exact details and can suffer emotional trauma  when hearing them.  A simple statement will do just fine to give evidential proof of contact.  For instance, "Your son indicates that he died of trauma to the left side of the head."

You, as the medium, must carefully handle the emotions you pick up during a reading, especially in the case of abusive situations.  It would be nice to think that everyone enjoyed a peaceful harmonious life but that is seldom the case.  You will be dealing with sexual, mental, drug and alcohol abuse during some communications.  No one needs the whole world to know their innermost secrets, so if you are in a chat room please do not bring up these subjects until you have them in a private setting.  Never use this type of information to "prove" how talented you are.

Although it is fun to explore the person's physical world and give all types of validated descriptions of their surroundings, this is not what they are there for.  They want contact with a departed loved one.  Make sure you are not just indulging the psychic side of the reading, instead of focusing on the spirit communication.

Your responsibility to the person you are reading is to attempt to contact the spirit as quickly as possible, establish communication and verify that it is indeed a spirit that they recognize.  It serves no purpose to go into detail about a great-great uncle they have never even heard of.

You must always tell the person up front that you may not be able to contact the exact person they wish to communicate with.  It is always up to the spirit world as to whom appears when.  There is no failure in not getting the "right" spirit.

As a medium you also have a responsibility to yourself.  You must assure that you are centered and prepared to do the communication.  Don't attempt to communicate if you are on medications that make you drowsy and less attentive.  Do not under any circumstances attempt to communicate if you have been drinking or using mood altering drugs.  Do not attempt to communicate for a person who is under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  Learn how to balance your energy and how energy from other sources can affect you.  You, as the medium, should always be conscious of the circumstances you place yourself in during a communication, and do your best to be centered and balanced.

It is my sincere hope that these simple, common sense, ethical approaches to mediumship will help you be a more compassionate and accurate medium .  It is also my hope that, if you are the person being read, you will recognize the style of communication you deserve to have and to leave quickly if the medium does not present the communication in a style that makes you comfortable.

Thank you.
